Pros and Cons

Pro: One of the biggest benefits of being a GEICO policyholder is that it offers discounts to many people, such as people. These include: federal employees, members of the military, students, and drivers aged 50+.

It also offers discounts to members and employees of more than 500 qualifying groups, such as certain alumni associations, business and professional organizations, education institutions, recreational organizations, and even Berkshire Hathaway companies. In short, it’s worth using GEICO’s insurance discount tool to find out if you qualify, because there’s a good chance you might.

Con: GEICO offers a range of car insurance products, although a couple of things are missing, such as gap coverage and usage-based insurance.

Types of Auto Insurance

All types of car insurance are listed below. GEICO also offers a number of add-ons including accident forgiveness, which rewards policyholders who drive for a period of time without getting into any accidents.

Bodily Injury Liability. If you’re at fault, this covers expenses related to other people’s injuries, such as medical and loss of income.
Property Damage Liability. This is also for situations in which you’re at fault, covering costs for damages to someone’s vehicle or other property (such as their home).
Collision. Covers damages to your car when it collides with another vehicle or object, such as a pole or fence.
Comprehensive. Covers damages to your car for non-collision losses such as theft, flood, or storms.
Uninsured. Covers expenses when the other party isn’t insured or doesn’t have a sufficient level of insurance to pay their liabilities.
Personal Injury Protection / Medical Payments. Covers medical expenses for injuries to you or your passengers resulting from an auto accident, regardless of which driver was a fault.
Rental Reimbursement. Pays for a rental car when your car is being repaired.
Roadside Assistance. Provides emergency roadside services when you’re broken down. Includes towing, jump-start, tire replacement, fuel delivery, and lock-out services.
Mechanical Breakdown Insurance. Unlike extended warranty, this type of coverage includes all parts and systems – not only those parts covered by most dealer warranties.

How to Apply

GEICO offers car insurance to residents of all 50 states and DC. You can apply online or by contacting an agent near you (use this link to locate the nearest agent). It takes just a few minutes to get a quote and purchase online. The application involves fairly standard questions, as detailed below:

Select auto insurance, enter your zip code and select “Start quote”. You can choose to apply for only car insurance or to bundle together insurance products (which can earn you discounts on your premiums).
