General Motors Insurance offers the following types of insurance:
Bodily injury
If someone is injured during a covered accident where you’re at fault, bodily injury coverage ensures that you won’t have to pay their medical expenses out of pocket. This also covers legal defense if you have a lawsuit filed against you as a result of injuries or death caused by a car accident. Here, you’ll have a coverage limit per person and per accident. The maximum coverage available is $250,000 per person or $500,000 per accident.
Property damage
General Motors Insurance’s property damage coverage pays for damage to other people’s property, including vehicles, caused by an accident where you were at fault. Legal coverage is also included if a lawsuit is filed against you. The maximum coverage available is $250,000.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive vehicle insurance covers damage to your vehicle not caused by a collision. This includes damage from theft, vandalism, fire, or hail. In some cases, policies may also cover natural disasters like bushfires or floods. This coverage is optional, and the deductible ranges from $300 to $2,000. Expect to pay more per month with a lower deductible.
Collision
General Motors Insurance’s collision coverage is similar to its comprehensive coverage, except that it covers damage caused by a collision with an object (for example, a tree) or another vehicle. Again, the deductible ranges from $300 to $2,000, and you can opt out of this coverage altogether if you want.
General Motors Insurance offers a selection of extra features and optional add-ons with its auto insurance policies.
Discounted policies
One thing that stands out to me is the number of discounts General Motors Insurance offers for eligible customers. For starters, you can connect eligible General Motors vehicles to OnStar’s driver tracking system. If your tracked driving shows the attributes of a good driver, you may be able to access discounts of up to 20% on your policy.
Even without an General Motors Insurance driver tracking system, you may be able to access discounts if you set up paperless automatic billing, have completed a four-year or longer college degree, are currently studying with a high grade-point average (GPA), or have completed a defensive driving course.
General Motors Insurance Safety and Security Plan
General Motors Insurance’s optional Safety and Security Plan comes with a suite of extras, including comprehensive roadside assistance, automatic crash response, and stolen vehicle assistance.
The General Motors Insurance Guardian mobile app comes with location services, an emergency notification button, and various other useful features. This is available as part of the Safety and Security Plan or as a stand-alone product, and I’d seriously recommend having a look at it.
General Motors Insurance Connected Vehicles Plan
With the Connected Vehicles Plan, you’ll have access to a range of entertainment and other features. This includes a mobile hotspot inside your vehicle, HD video streaming for your passengers, and Alexa voice control for everything from changing the radio station to finding directions to your destination.
You can start the application process by entering your ZIP code on the General Motors Insurance website and clicking the “Get a Quote” button. You’ll need to enter a small amount of personal information, including your name, address, and email, before giving the specifics of your vehicle and driving history.
Here, you’ll have to enter the exact details of your vehicle to ensure you’re presented with the most appropriate insurance options. This includes your vehicle year, make, and model. General Motors Insurance will also ask you about any additional safety features, anti-theft devices, and what the vehicle is mainly used for.
Next, you’ll be directed to a quotes page. You can adjust your coverage limits here. These limits have a direct impact on your quote price. After reviewing your quote, you can add more detailed information, including your vehicle identification number (VIN) and driver's license number. A further discount may be available if you have a good driving record.
After this, it’s time to review your policy coverage and complete the checkout. You can either pay upfront (for a small discount) or with recurring monthly payments.
