Founded in 2014, BHTP is the travel insurance brand within the greater Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) family. BHSI is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Inc., a multinational holding company whose core business interest is in the insurance industry. Its current chairman and CEO, Warren Buffett, is one of the world's richest and best-known investors and business magnates.

BHTP features eight different travel insurance policies offering varying levels of coverage. It has several budget policies that include minimal flight or roadside protection and medical coverage, as well as policies giving additional protection and higher coverage limits. BHTP also covers policies for luxury and niche travel, such as cruises and adventure sports.

What is BHTP?

In 2021, nearly 111,000 flights were canceled and over two million travel bags were mishandled. With BHTP travel insurance, you can claim compensation for these and many more issues that may occur during the course of your travels.

BHTP’s ExactCare policies can reimburse your non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason. There’s also coverage for trip delays and interruptions, baggage delays, and emergency evacuation or repatriation. Its more limited AirCare policy covers only flight delays and cancelations and lost baggage, while ExactCare Light covers you during road trips in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

BHTP also offers special packages for thrill-seekers and luxury travelers. AdrenalineCare includes specific coverage where holiday activities carry higher levels of risk for injury or death, while the WaveCare policy covers you while you’re on a cruise. The LuxuryCare policy offers BHTP’s highest level of coverage and protection, including the option to cancel your trip for any reason.

Suitable For?

BHTP is a great choice for travelers on a budget. Based on my research, BHTP’s policies have costs that can fall far below the industry average. While BHTP’s plans will cost between 0.5%-9% of your total trip cost, the average is 5%-10%. That can spell big savings for anyone concerned about minimizing their travel expenses.

Policy Types and Terms Available

The price of your BHTP insurance policy varies depending on several factors, including your age, the cost of your trip, the amount of coverage you need, and the number of people on your policy. The length of your trip and destination can also play a factor.

Based on my research, BHTP’s policies cost between 0.5%-9% of your total trip cost, compared to the industry average of 5%-10%. For example, for a $2,000 trip to the United Kingdom for a 32-year-old traveler, the ExactCare Value policy would cost $50. This equates to an insurance cost of 2.5% of the total trip cost. Meanwhile, LuxuryCare would cost $120 for the same trip, or 6% of the total trip cost.

Here are the costs for each policy that features air travel coverage, based on the same trip:

AirCare

$29.00

ExactCare Value

$50.00

ExactCare

$67.00

ExactCare Extra

$87.00

WaveCare

$73.00

AdrenalineCare

$113.00

LuxuryCare

$120.00

Be advised, your policy premium will increase if you add any of the optional riders. Available riders vary depending on the policy but may include the “cancel for any reason” or car rental collision coverage riders. In the example above, adding car rental collision coverage would increase the cost by $10 per day. Meanwhile, adding “cancel for any reason” to the LuxuryCare policy increases its cost by $39.10.

Application Process

BHTP is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., one of the world's most visible and reputable conglomerates. It’s accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with an A+ rating. While the customer rating on its BBB profile is low, this is based on only 10 reviews, all of which focus on issues with claim reimbursement. Across various review websites, I found that BHTP receives an average customer rating of 4/5 stars or better.

With BHTP, you get a free-look guarantee that allows you to cancel your policy within 15 days of the effective date of your insurance or your scheduled departure date, whichever comes first. Moreover, it’s easy to file and track your claim on its website, over the phone, or through the BHTP mobile app.

Terms and fees

When you purchase your travel insurance policy, you’ll pay an upfront premium in exchange for the coverage options included in your policy. Make sure to review your policy closely to learn the details of your coverage limits, covered reasons, and exclusions.

Is There a BHTP App?

You can use the BHTP app if you want to file or check on the status of your claim. It also allows you to select your preferred method for receiving reimbursement.

The app is available on both Android and iOS devices, but Android users report issues with using the app to file a claim and check on their claim status.

Help & Support

If you have general questions or wish to file a claim, you can contact BHTP’s customer service team from 7am-7pm (CT), Monday-Friday. In my experience, the typical response time is a matter of a few minutes, and the automated call routing system is effective and easy to use.

You can also send your questions via email, although your response time will be significantly longer. Alternatively, you can check out the Resources page on BHTP’s website. There, you can find articles on travel insurance, FAQs, blog posts, and testimonials.

BHTP includes 24/7 travel and medical assistance on all its policies. This service is there for you in case your trip gets canceled or delayed, you lose your bags, or you or someone in your traveling party gets hurt or needs medical assistance. Be advised that international rates apply if you call the travel assistance line from outside the US or Canada.

BHTP At A Glance

BHTP offers a great range of policies that are suitable for the vast majority of travelers. It features budget and luxury plans that can fit almost any situation, including adventure travel, road trips, and cruises.

I also love that all of its policies come with 24/7 emergency travel assistance and a free look period. BHTP makes it easy to get a quote and file a claim, so there’s no reason not to check out its offerings the next time you plan a trip.

FAQs

When does travel insurance coverage start?

Your travel insurance coverage starts on your Coverage Effective Date. Typically, this is midnight on the day that you pay your travel insurance policy premium.

Does travel insurance cover terrorism?

Unless you have “cancel for any reason” coverage, your travel insurance policy won’t reimburse you if you cancel your trip because you’re afraid a terrorist attack might happen. However, your policy does cover you in the event that a terrorist attack occurs in your area while you are traveling.

Will travel insurance cover cancelation due to weather?

Your travel insurance policy includes reimbursement for accommodation and other expenses due to bad weather. To be covered, the storm has to be considered “unforeseen”, meaning it’s not a named storm, blizzard, or hurricane.
