Generali Global Assistance is a travel insurance company with offices in San Diego, California, and Pembroke Pines, Florida. The company has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2009 and has an A+ rating. In 2021, Generali appeared in Forbes Advisor’s Best Travel Insurance Companies list, and in 2022, US News & World Report named it one of the Best COVID-19 Travel Insurance Options.
Generali offers three travel insurance plans: Standard, Preferred, and Premium. Details of each plan are clearly stated on the company’s website, and you can get a quote within a few minutes. You can sign up for a plan and file a claim directly through Generali’s website.
Generali travel insurance plans will appeal to both domestic and international travelers. All plans bundle various types of coverage, so you don’t need to worry about purchasing a bunch of add-ons. You’ll also have COVID coverage, 100% coverage for trip cancellation, substantial emergency medical coverage (up to $1 million), and trip interruption coverage of up to 175%.
What I really like about Generali is that it’s one of the few travel insurance companies offering coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. You can qualify for this on the Premium Plan if you purchase your policy before or within 24 hours of making your final trip payment.
Generali also provides a 24/7 travel assistance hotline. Its representatives are available to help with locating medical care, language interpretation, emergency cash transfers, legal referrals, and more.
Generali offers travel insurance that can suit the needs of a broad range of travelers. Compared to other travel insurance companies, Generali’s most significant highlight may be their high emergency medical limit of $1,000,000. In contrast, some competing insurance providers have emergency medical limits as low as 10% of that amount. That makes Generali a preferred choice for those traveling to destinations where emergency medical care can be more expensive.
Generali offers three travel insurance plans and several add-on options:

How much you pay for General travel insurance will largely depend on the package you choose and your specific trip details. For example, you may end up paying a bit more ($15-$20), if your trip is three weeks or longer. However, there are factors that determine the price of a policy, other than the length of your trip.
Rental car damage coverage will cost you approximately an extra $10/day. For example, if you get rental car coverage for seven days, you can expect to pay an additional $70 on top of what you pay for your selected tier.
You can purchase Generali travel insurance plans directly through the company’s website. After purchasing, you’ll receive an email detailing all of your travel insurance information. If you need to file a claim during or after your trip, you can head to the website and enter your policy number. The company will then take you to its eClaims portal.
After submitting your claim, you can receive an e-payment via Zelle so the money goes directly into your bank account. To receive an e-payment, you need a valid email and phone number, and you need to be a United States resident. Otherwise, you can opt to receive a check via mail.
The best way to purchase travel insurance with Generali is through the company’s website. First, we recommend taking some time to browse the three available plans to help you decide which option is best for you. Then, follow these steps to continue with your purchase:
Head to the Generali website and click “Get a Quote”.
Fill out some basic information to get an accurate pricing estimate. You’ll need to provide your name, birthdate, travel destination, trip length and dates, and trip cost.
After this, Generali will generate prices for each of its insurance tiers. You can then select your desired insurance package, as well as any add-ons.
Next, click “Buy Insurance” and Generali will take you to a checkout page where it will ask for your name and address.
After this, you can submit your payment by entering your credit or debit card information.
Once you’ve made your purchase, you’ll be taken to the purchase confirmation page so you can review your plan details for accuracy. Generali will also send you a confirmation letter via email or to the mailing address you provided.
I found the signup process with Generali to be easy and straightforward—I was able to purchase a package in just a few minutes. The customer service phone number is at the top of each page, and the website also has a live chat feature, so it’s reassuring to know you can contact someone at any point if you have questions about the signup process.
The website even includes a step-by-step guide on how to purchase travel insurance with Generali. Also, if you need to make any changes to your trip details, you can click “Edit Trip Details” at any point during the checkout process.
I believe that Generali is a safe and reliable company to purchase travel insurance from. The company has an A+ rating with the BBB. Additionally, its insurance plans are underwritten by Generali US Branch, which was formed in 1935 and is licensed in all states. Generali is also accredited by the US Travel Insurance Association (USTIA).
Generali offers several options to contact customer service. There’s a live chat feature on the company’s website that you can access 24/7. It allows you to ask questions related to trip coverage, policy cancellation and modification, and claim filing. The company also has a robust FAQs page.
You can contact Generali by phone 24/7. For general customer service inquiries or questions about your insurance package, you can call 800-874-2442 for assistance in English or 800-318-0179 for assistance in Spanish. You should be able to get through to a phone representative within a few minutes.
Alternatively, you can email customerservice@generalitravelinsurance.com. You can expect to hear back by email within one business day.
For help filing a claim, you can call 800-541-3522, Monday-Friday, 6am-6pm (PT), or you can send an email to claims@generalitravelinsurance.com. If you need 24/7 emergency assistance, you can call 877-243-4135 toll-free in the US or make a worldwide collect call on +1-240-330-1529.
In my opinion, Generali is worth it for those seeking travel insurance with high coverage limits. Compared to the industry standard, Generali offers much higher coverage for emergency medical assistance and trip interruptions. Additionally, it’s one of the few travel insurance companies to allow medical coverage for pre-existing conditions.
While it’s a bit disappointing that Generali doesn’t have an app, navigating the company website is incredibly easy, and I love that you can get a transparent quote within minutes. I found it very easy to get hold of customer service, and I like that there’s a range of options for contacting a representative.
